Sint Maarten is the Dutch side of the island, spanning sixteen square miles. St. Martin is the French side, covering 21 square miles. Known as the Friendly Island, it is the smallest island in the world that is shared by two nations. Together, the two countries make up one of the most diverse islands in the Caribbean. The two co-existing nationalities bring a taste of Europe to a pleasant Caribbean climate, which is why it is said about Sint Maarten/St. Martin, a little European, a lot of Caribbean.
